This article will answer questions about what to bring to the IMAT, what to avoid, and how to handle the procedural steps on the day of the exam.
It also covers rules, instructions on filling out documents, and practical recommendations to make the process smoother.
The upcoming IMAT 2025 date has not yet been announced, but in 2024 it was held on 17 September, so preparation and awareness of these guidelines remain essential.
IMAT 2025: Preparing for the Unknown Date
It is essential to prepare thoroughly for the next sitting of the exam, whether the date is confirmed or not. Observing how things worked in 2024 can offer valuable insights into what to expect, when to arrive, and what materials to have ready.
Items to Bring to the Test Venue
- Identification DocumentCarry an original passport, ID card, or other valid ID. It should match what you submitted at registration if the test center so requires. Copies are typically not allowed.
- IMAT Receipt and Booking ConfirmationBring printed evidence of your payment receipt, confirmation emails, and any official documents indicating your test registration. Have them ready as separate paper copies.
- Water Bottle (Optional)Must be clear and colorless, with no labels or writing on it. Some test centers are strict about this, so ensure your bottle is completely transparent.
- StationeryTest centers often provide black pens. If that is not the case, you can bring your own, but follow local instructions about what can be carried into the test room.
- Parent Consent FormIf you are under 18, some venues will ask for a completed consent form.
- Bag or BackpackYou cannot usually keep this with you during the exam, but you can store it in the cloakroom. It is a good idea to have one place to keep personal items you cannot bring to the desk, such as phones and valuables.
What You Should NOT Bring
- Unnecessary ValuablesAvoid bringing items such as jewelry or large electronics. The center does not take responsibility for your possessions.
- Electronic DevicesAll devices should be placed in your bag and stored away. You might be scanned with a metal detector, and anyone found with an unauthorized device risks disqualification.
- Unauthorized MaterialsNotes, calculators, periodic tables, or any content that gives an unfair advantage are strictly forbidden. Leave them at home.
IMAT Instructions and Documents
You will receive a white envelope containing:
- A set of question papers (do not open until told).
- A cover sheet with a barcode.
- A Candidate Data Sheet.
- An answer sheet (leave it blank except for the answers).
Check that the barcode on the cover sheet and the answer sheet match. Also verify the number on the front of the question paper aligns with these. Raise your hand if something is inconsistent.
Candidate Data Sheet
When instructed, fill out your Candidate Data Sheet carefully. Do not sign it until prompted to do so at the end, or you will need a new one. If you are Italian, you must fill in the Fiscal Code section (Codice Fiscale); if not, leave it blank.
Starting the Exam
Wait for the signal to open the question papers. You will have 100 minutes unless otherwise authorized. Invigilators will warn you when 30 minutes and 10 minutes remain. The moment the exam ends, put your pen down immediately.
End of the Exam
- Answer Sheet and unsigned Data Sheet stay on your desk.
- The question papers, cover sheet, and instructions go back in the white envelope, with the cover sheet’s barcode visible in the envelope window.
- You will be called to a desk where you will select matching barcode stickers, place them onto your Data Sheet and Answer Sheet, then sign your Data Sheet. Place each sheet in the proper container.
