IMAT 2025 Registration: Dates, Cost, Documents

Discover how to register for IMAT 2025: key dates, costs, required documents, and official steps explained clearly with direct links to official sources.

Every year, the International Medical Admissions Test (IMAT) is the key step for students who wish to enter Medicine and Surgery or Dentistry programs taught in English at Italian universities.

In 2025, the procedure follows the new Ministerial Decree No. 599 of August 7, 2025, which officially defines the test dates, rules, and admission criteria.

Today we will explain when registration opens, how to apply correctly, which documents you need, and what mistakes to avoid, while linking every point to the official sources published by the Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR) and the Universitaly portal.

When registration opens and main deadlines

The IMAT 2025 registration opens on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, and closes at 3:00 p.m. (GMT+2) on Tuesday, September 9, 2025.

The test date is Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in Italy (with local adjustments abroad). The anonymous results (shown by candidate code) will be published on Thursday, September 25, 2025, while each candidate’s personal score and paper will be available from Monday, October 6, 2025.

The national ranking list will be released on Monday, October 13, 2025, followed by the first scrolling updates from Monday, October 20, 2025.

All these official dates are confirmed in the Ministerial Decree No. 599 of 07/08/2025 and detailed in its Annex 2 – Procedures for Registration, Access to Results and Rankings.

Where to register: official portals and procedure

Registration is carried out only through the official portal Universitaly.

After creating an account with a valid email, you can access the section “National Admission Tests for Limited-Enrollment Programs and IMAT”. From there, the procedure will guide you through filling in your personal data and selecting, in order of preference, the universities where you want to apply.

When registering, you must choose the programs and test location (Italy or abroad) and confirm everything before the deadline. The procedure is explained in the Annex 2 of the Ministerial Decree No. 599/2025, and universities such as Padua and Catania publish the same steps in their official calls for applications.

Remember that without completing the payment, your registration is not valid, even if you filled out the form correctly.

Test fee and payment methods

The participation fee is defined every year through the Universitaly platform at the moment of registration. Although the exact amount will appear directly in the form, it is usually around €130, as stated on university websites like the Harvey course at the University of Pavia.

Payment is made online through Universitaly, following the methods shown during the registration process (credit card or other available options). The registration is valid only after payment and uploading the confirmation receipt in your personal area.

Currently, the Ministerial Decree No. 599/2025 does not foresee exemptions, so all candidates must pay the contribution unless explicitly indicated on the portal.

Required documents and how to fill them correctly

When filling in the registration form, candidates must enter:

  • Full name, date and place of birth, and citizenship
  • Italian fiscal code (if applicable)
  • Address of residence and contact email
  • Identification document details (type, number, issuing authority, expiry date)

All information must be accurate and truthful, as required by Article 46 of Presidential Decree No. 445/2000.

The ID document used for registration must still be valid on the test day and match the details entered online. Mismatched or expired documents lead to exclusion from the exam room.

International students who need a study visa must also follow the dedicated procedure on the Universitaly “International Students” page, which manages pre-enrolment and visa documentation.

How to choose your test center

The test date is the same worldwide, on September 17, 2025, but candidates can choose where to sit the test.

If you select Italy, your first university preference automatically becomes your exam center, and cannot be changed later.

If you choose to take the test abroad, you can select one of the authorized centers listed in the Table A – Countries and Test Centers attached to the Ministerial Decree.

Universities like Padua confirm that no changes to the chosen center are allowed after registration closes.

Common mistakes to avoid

Many candidates make small but serious errors that can compromise their registration.

The most common one is missing the deadline: after 3:00 p.m. (GMT+2) on September 9, 2025, you can no longer edit or submit your application. The second frequent mistake is changing or misreporting your ID after registering. Always check that your document matches the data on your form.

Another serious error is bringing unauthorized materials (phones, smartwatches, notes, or pens). The Ministerial Decree clearly states that any external devices or notes will lead to disqualification.

Finally, make sure you are not confusing IMAT with the new “open semester” test for Italian-taught programs. They are completely different procedures, and only the Ministerial Decree No. 599/2025 applies to IMAT.

How to edit or cancel your registration

Until September 9, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. (GMT+2), you can access your Universitaly account and modify your preferences or details. After that, no changes are possible.

Your registration is valid only after payment, and even if you withdraw later, the fee is non-refundable, as clarified in multiple official university calls.

Always save both your payment receipt and your registration confirmation PDF, which prove that you completed the process within the deadline.

Official call for applications: what to read and check

The national call for IMAT 2025 is the Ministerial Decree No. 599 of August 7, 2025.

Within this document, the most relevant parts are:

  • Annex 2, which describes the full registration procedure
  • Annex A, which lists all the exam topics (biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, logical reasoning) – accessible here
  • Table A, which lists countries and test centers
  • Table B, which defines the number of available seats per university – view it here

Each university also publishes its own local call (for example, Padua or Catania) with details on identification, entry times, and deadlines for enrollment after ranking results.

Test structure, scoring, and ranking rules

The IMAT lasts 100 minutes and includes 60 multiple-choice questions:

  • 4 on reading and general knowledge
  • 5 on logical reasoning and problem solving
  • 23 on biology
  • 15 on chemistry
  • 13 on physics and mathematics

Each correct answer gives 1.5 points, wrong answers subtract 0.4, and blank answers count 0.

For candidates from the European Union (and equivalent categories), the minimum passing score is 20 points. For non-EU candidates residing abroad, a score higher than 0 is sufficient for eligibility.

In case of tied scores, precedence is given based on the scores in biology, chemistry, physics/mathematics, reasoning, and then reading skills.

These rules are detailed in Articles 2 and 3 of the Ministerial Decree No. 599/2025.

Results and national ranking

The evaluation and ranking are managed by CINECA, the inter-university consortium responsible for IT management of admission tests.

Results will first appear anonymously on September 25, 2025, followed by the personal scores and exam papers in each candidate’s private area on October 6, 2025.

The national ranking list will then be published on October 13, 2025 on Universitaly, indicating whether each candidate is “assigned” (must enroll immediately) or “booked” (can wait for later scrolling).

All ranking procedures are described in the Annex 2 of the decree.

Final registration checklist

To complete your IMAT 2025 registration correctly, you must:

  1. Create a profile on Universitaly
  2. Enter your personal details and upload a valid ID
  3. Choose your preferred courses and universities (your first choice in Italy becomes your exam location)
  4. Select your international center if taking the test abroad (see Table A)
  5. Pay the registration fee within September 9, 2025 – 3:00 p.m. (GMT+2)
  6. Save your registration receipt and confirmation

All procedures, documents, and deadlines are confirmed in the Ministerial Decree No. 599/2025 and its annexes.
